SILI 4.0 – Smart Indoor Localization for Industry 4.0 Applications.

SILI 4.0 is a research and development project funded through the POR CALABRIA FESR-FSE 2014-2020 ASSE I – PROMOTION OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATION.

The primary purpose of the project was related to the research and development of one or more dedicated solutions to meet the indoor localization needs highlighted in the contemporary industrial environment and its future lines of development (the so-called Industry 4.0).
In particular, the best technological approaches have been developed up to the functional prototyping of multiple indoor tracking systems that disregard the presence of a “pedestrian user” and/or a smartphone (as required by the current technology of the proponent GiPStech Srl) to get to tracking personnel, goods and wheeled vehicles in order to meet the needs highlighted by industrial indoor logistics, which is more oriented precisely to tracking positions and flows than to offering a tracking service to end users.

Expected Results.

This Project is expected to define new technological assets that meet the demands received from the Industry 4.0 market and become the core on which to build new end-to-end products and services that meet the demands and can contribute to substantial commercial success.
In particular, it is intended to develop:

  1. A “smart tag” solution capable of locating and tracking users with a high degree of accuracy and reliability appropriate to the context of use but without the aid of smartphones. The expected level of output is in the same order as what GiPStech has achieved to date with the aid of smartphones, but disregarding the use of smartphones themselves and focusing on tag miniaturization and battery life.
  2. A “smart tag” solution capable of locating moving goods and mobile vehicles with a degree of accuracy and reliability appropriate to the context of use. Again, the level of output sought is in the same order as what GiPStech has realized to date with the aid of smartphones and referring to the pedestrian user, applied, however, there where “pitch” is not available as a fundamental metric and aiming at the identification of ancillary sensors as least invasive and as highly usable in the industrial context.
  3. A “smart node” solution capable of locating both users and moving objects with a medium degree of accuracy and reliability appropriate to the context of use and disregarding the installation of a complex device on board the assets themselves. In this case, less performing performance is expected (although always in the range of what is acceptable to potential customers) but a system operationally easier to integrate into industrial processes, completely disregarding the need for computational capacity on board the user or moving object to be located, in favor of intelligence moved into the infrastructure.
