Industry 4.0 | Asset tracking and automation

Industry 4.0 asset tracking: make the factory’s moving parts visible

Locate people, vehicles and mobile assets, connect the field to workflows, and build a data foundation for better-informed operational and maintenance decisions.

01 | Operational visibility

From location to operational context

The GiPStech Solutions page frames Industry 4.0 as the convergence of location, asset management and digital workflows. Knowing where a vehicle, tool or team is reduces uncertainty; connecting that position to identity, status and activity makes the data operationally useful.

The goal is not to observe every movement, but to make relevant information available to those who must find an item, coordinate a task, verify a step or respond to an anomaly. Purpose, roles, retention periods and access must be defined before tracking begins, especially when data concerns people.

02 | Architecture

Technology follows the use case

GiPStech localization technology combines multiple sources, including inertial sensors, geomagnetism, radio signals, identification and vision. In industry, the combination depends on accuracy, latency, coverage, environment, power consumption and process criticality: no single answer fits every facility.

Identify

NFC, RFID, UHF or serial numbers bind data to the correct item.

Locate

Indoor, outdoor and RTLS options address different coverage and accuracy requirements.

Contextualize

Maps, zones and geofences connect location to the process.

Trigger action

Rules and events turn data into alerts, missions and checks.

03 | Intralogistics

Internal flows become measurable

Research on location-data requirements for intralogistics shows that transparency, efficiency and safety require parameters aligned with the application, including accuracy, update rate and latency. The project should therefore start from the decision to be supported, not from the technology on hand.

Tracking vehicles, materials, equipment and authorized workers can reduce search effort and create historical records of routes, dwell, crossings and area use. Heatmaps and replay help form hypotheses about congestion and inefficient sequences, which must then be verified with process owners.

04 | Asset2Work

From completed work to data-driven maintenance

NIST research on asset condition management links condition awareness, diagnostics and estimates of future health to predictive maintenance, while emphasizing integration with enterprise applications. This direction requires reliable data, validated models and clear accountability.

Asset2Work manages asset registers, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, checklists, reports, time records and field evidence. Through integrations it can receive events from customer systems and return the operational outcome: it does not replace the IoT layer, but provides a structured history that can feed analytics and predictive models alongside machine data.

The model suggests; the validated process assigns, performs and documents the intervention.

05 | Benefits

Benefits visible in the process

Value should be measured against the selected process, using a baseline and shared indicators. Results depend on scope, data quality, field adoption and integration with existing systems; this is why we avoid generic percentages and start from verifiable metrics.

Less searching

Assets and equipment become findable according to process-relevant criteria.

Better coordination

Location, priority and responsibility converge in the same operational action.

Timely maintenance

Plans, events and evidence help teams act with the context they need.

Continuous improvement

Historical records make flows, timing and operational patterns analysable.

06 | Adoption

Start with a problem, scale on results

An effective programme does not begin by tracking the entire facility. It selects a high-value use case, defines data and responsibilities, tests the solution in the real environment and expands only after measuring benefits, limitations and operational sustainability.

01

Define the case

Problem, users, decisions, baseline and KPIs before technology.

02

Design the data

Accuracy, coverage, update rate, privacy, roles and integrations.

03

Validate in the field

Pilot under real conditions, with technical tests and workflow validation.

04

Integrate and scale

Consolidate the process, measure outcomes and expand by priority.
