Location and geofencing

Automatic presence detection in defined areas

The GiPStech mobile app turns entries, exits and dwell time into operational events, without requiring an extra action from the user.

01 Frictionless presence

Presence becomes an event, not a gesture

In badge-based processes, the record depends on a deliberate tap at a reader. In corporate-complex access control, trade reporting describes proximity badges presented to readers at doors and entry points, with access levels for areas and schedules. With the smartphone already in a pocket and the application active, entry to and exit from an area can be detected transparently and made available to the process.

The solution combines indoor location, geofencing and smartphone sensor fusion. It does not require the GiPStech app: the technology can be integrated into a third-party app through the SDK provided by GiPStech. Its purpose is not to replace physical access control, but to provide continuous, contextual digital evidence of presence in defined spaces.

Natural entry into a work area with a smartphone in a pocket

From a defined space to an event available to the process.

02 From place to data

From space to operational evidence

Virtual areas are associated with the spaces that matter to the process: a classroom, production zone, office or restricted area. When the device crosses the boundary, the location engine generates an entry or exit event; the event sequence can also establish dwell time.

Area configuration, thresholds, authorised profiles and integrations remain project parameters. Entry and exit events are handled by the app and placed by the GiPStech solution in the context of indoor location and the process. This makes it possible to align the evidence produced with applicable rules, including information to data subjects, minimisation and data retention.

03 Events that matter

Presence, dwell time, exceptions

Events can support presence records, dwell-time checks and alerts for permitted or unauthorised areas. The meaning of an event depends on the user's profile and on the rule defined for that area.

Entry and exit

Each area crossing can become a time-stamped event for the destination system.

Dwell time

The event sequence can establish time spent in the area, according to process rules.

Areas and profiles

An event can trigger an alert when access is not consistent with the authorised profile.

Technology for operational and sensitive spaces

Detection can be applied in offices, industrial areas, campuses and any environment where knowing presence, entry, exit and dwell time helps govern a process. In more sensitive contexts, the focus extends to areas where access must be checked or alerted.

GiPStech location technology combines the building’s geomagnetic fingerprint and smartphone inertial sensors, with optional supporting signals selected for the environment. Configuration should therefore be assessed for the specific use case, not through an abstract promise of accuracy.

05 Campus application

Class attendance, without manual roll call

On university campuses, the presence event can be reconciled with data from the academic system: lesson, schedule, classroom and student. Independent higher-education reporting has described using smartphone-based geofences to record class attendance and the discussion around location-data handling. Automated detection does not replace university rules, but provides data that can be checked and integrated into the attendance process.

The GiPStech corpus records real geofencing applications for classroom attendance at LUISS and Campus Bio-Medico. Configuration details, validation criteria and outcomes remain to be defined with each university.

Lesson, time, classroom

The lesson context defines the meaning of a presence event.

Transparent experience

The student carries a smartphone; no tap at a reader is required.

Reconcilable data

Events can be related to information from the university system.

06 Design and integration

From map to process

Every implementation starts with the spaces to observe and the decisions the data must support. These three stages connect configuration, users and systems while keeping process and data-processing requirements explicit.

01

Define the areas

Map spaces, virtual boundaries and the events required.

02

Enable users and rules

Associate the app, authorised profiles, thresholds and alert criteria.

03

Integrate the evidence

Send events to systems managing attendance, safety or academic processes.
