Indoor positioning for hospitals
Indoor positioning, guided routes and equipment tracking help patients and visitors find their way and staff locate assets. Asset2Work connects equipment with operational tasks and work to be carried out across the hospital.
Navigate the hospital with greater independence
An entrance, several buildings and a clinic to find. GiPStech brings indoor positioning and route guidance to patient and visitor apps, connecting a person’s location to maps, floors and points of interest.
Directions support the journey between departments and services. Accessible routes and floor changes are configured against the facility’s maps, providing guidance that reflects the space and the needs of its users.
NHS guidance on wayfinding in healthcare facilities confirms that wayfinding must be designed as a coherent experience, not as signage alone. GiPStech brings this principle into the digital experience, connecting maps, points of interest and guided routes to a person’s location.

Find equipment when it is needed
Infusion pumps, wheelchairs and mobile devices move between departments. A tracking solution makes their location visible and helps staff find the item they need to retrieve.
GiPStech combines identification, maps and positioning technologies selected for the setting. Coverage, accuracy and update frequency are designed around the space and the equipment. Availability status also requires operational information about the asset.
The Cleveland Clinic study demonstrates the value of making equipment locatable: with a Wi‑Fi RFID programme, median ventilator search time fell from 18 to 3 minutes. This is a result from that specific 2013 study. For GiPStech, it is a reference for the benefit to measure, while the solution combines multimodal positioning, maps and identification to select the architecture suited to each facility.
Coordinate people, spaces and support
Location adds context to facility services. Functions are configured around patients, staff and organisational needs, defining who receives information and how it is used.
Assisted routes
Maps and points of interest help people reach departments and services. Route configuration takes the accessibility of the space into account.
Area events
Entering or leaving defined areas can notify the staff responsible for the process, using devices and rules selected for the project.
Flow and space use
Flow information helps teams understand how spaces are used and plan services. Metrics and aggregation levels are defined with the facility.
From location to action with Asset2Work
Knowing where an asset is located is the starting point. Asset2Work connects asset identification to operational records, issue reports and the work to be carried out.
Staff consult the asset record, receive a task and document the intervention with checklists and field evidence. The app supports offline work with synchronisation; APIs connect the process to the facility’s systems.
Location, asset status and task progress remain distinct information, connected to provide a more complete operational view.
Measure value where the work happens
A useful project starts with observable measures. In the 2023/24 Mid Cheshire trial, NHS England reports up to 30 minutes per day saved by frontline staff when locating equipment using an RTLS built on RFID, BLE, Wi‑Fi infrastructure and Cisco DNA Spaces. The experience shows that even a complex architecture can generate value; for GiPStech, it becomes a reference for defining a local comparison between operational benefit, required coverage and the infrastructure needed.
For the GiPStech solution, targets are agreed with the facility and assessed by comparing the baseline with actual service use. Multimodal technology makes it possible to size the solution around the use case instead of assuming that one infrastructure suits every department.
Search time
Measure the time needed to find equipment, successful searches and cases that still require a manual check.
Wayfinding experience
Assess route completion, requests for help and the experience of people with accessibility needs.
Documented work
Track completed tasks, response times and the quality of evidence captured during interventions.
From the first department to an integrated solution
Start with a defined scope, clear users, spaces and expected outcomes. Technology follows the use case: smartphone navigation, asset identification and equipment tracking each require a specific assessment.
Define the need
Select a department or route and agree baseline measures with the people who will use the service.
Map and configure
Check maps, coverage and devices; configure points of interest, zones and routes.
Integrate workflows
Connect apps, asset records and tasks to existing systems, defining roles and information handling.
Evaluate and expand
Observe use in the field, compare measures and extend the service based on the results.
